NanoColor - Light, Compact, OCIO-Based Color Management - Carol Payne, Consultant; Doug Walker, Autodesk; Nick Porcino, Pixar Animation Studios & Jonathan Stone, MaterialX
Sunday July 28, 2024 11:00am - 11:30am MDT
NanoColor is a new addition to OpenColorIO based on work from multiple projects, people, and companies to solve a common problem - needing a "lighter" version of OCIO with a specific subset of functionality. Presenters from OCIO, USD, and MaterialX, representing companies such as Autodesk, Pixar, and Lucasfilm will talk about the design goals, development process, and scope of NanoColor, and (hopefully) have a working prototype to share. We feel that this work will be applicable to many other projects, applications, and pipelines, and are excited to continue this development.

AYON: Open-Source Pipeline for Studios - Milan Kolar, Ynput
Sunday July 28, 2024 1:20pm - 1:30pm MDT
AYON represents the next stage in the evolution of the popular open-source platform, OpenPype, developed by the pipeline specialists at Ynput. It was created by a team of industry veterans who had previously worked on demanding productions, enduring excessive hours during crunch times. Eager to break away from ‘the norm’ and discover a better way of working where artists can go home on time, they first created AYON in 2018 as an in-house pipeline tool, building on top of available open-source technology and open-sourcing AYON itself too. Fast forward six years, and it is now deployed globally in hundreds of studios working on animation and VFX projects. This open-source platform is designed to streamline creative studios’ workflows, ensuring seamless project delivery from concept to completion.

Pythonic Shader Metaprogramming with Metashade - Pavlo Penenko, Maxon Computer
Sunday July 28, 2024 1:35pm - 1:45pm MDT
This talk introduces Metashade - a Python-based embedded domain-specific language (EDSL) for programming shaders (https://github.com/ppenenko/metashade). Metashade overloads Python's syntax to generate code in a target shading language. The presentation starts with a discussion of known shader programming challenges, such as managing permutations, portability, and code reuse. It then provides an overview of existing solutions, such as the C preprocessor, generics, shader graphs, transpiling, and EDSLs. Finally, the presentation details the design and implementation of Metashade and argues how it can be an improvement over the existing methods. I would base my talk of these slides, condensed to fit the 20 - 30 minute limit: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vQtYIwXIkMnVC6TzWTKPAtZIA6_xeUCQc8Mvyziu0qy7HDUduz_onsJ5TabxTuuVQ/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000

Sunday July 28, 2024 1:50pm - 2:20pm MDT
OpenEXR has reached a 25 year milestone, first created in 1999 by ILM. This talk discusses that history, and with performance engineering, security practices, and continued innovation, what the TSC is doing to ensure it survives for another 25 years. What is performance engineering? Will cover that. What are security practices? Will cover that. How does this apply to your code bases? This talk should enable that. Should you open source everything? developing a good open standard isn't a smooth road, but this will discuss the value of that

Developing AWS Deadline Cloud on Open Job Description: Balancing Open Source and Commercial Offering - Pauline Koh, Amazon Web Services
Sunday July 28, 2024 3:40pm - 4:00pm MDT
This technical presentation will dive into the development of AWS Deadline Cloud, a fully managed cloud rendering service, built in parallel with the open source Open Job Description (OJD) specification. We'll explore the architectural decisions made to integrate OJD as the foundation for defining and executing render jobs within Deadline Cloud, while ensuring OJD remained an independent open source project which could be valuable for the broader community. Attendees will gain insights into how the Deadline Cloud team worked to implement scalable and performant execution of OJD job specifications, addressing security and access management concerns specific to cloud rendering environments. Key focuses include the monitoring and orchestration solutions built atop OJD, techniques for optimizing cloud resource utilization, and lessons learned in developing a cloud service around an emerging open standard.
